How to Add Your First Property
Five fields, under a minute. Here’s exactly what to fill in — and what can wait.

Before you start
You’ll need the property’s address and postcode. Everything else is optional and can be added or changed later from the property’s detail page.
Step by step
- From the sidebar, go to Properties.
- Click Add Property (top right).
- Fill in the required fields:
- Property Name — anything that helps you recognise it, e.g. “42 Oak Lane”
- Address Line 1, City, Postal Code — RentFig auto-detects the Local Authority from your postcode, which later licensing and compliance checks use
- Property Type — Residential, Commercial, or Mixed
- Portfoliois filled in automatically — RentFig already created a default one for you. Managing more than one ownership structure (yourself and a limited company, for example)? You can add more portfolios and choose between them later.
- Click Next — Add Sub-Units.
- If the property has separate lettable rooms or flats — an HMO, for example — add them now, or click Skip — No Sub-Units to finish straight away. You can always add sub-units later from the property page.
That’s it — your property is live.
What can wait
Everything below is optional and editable any time from the property’s detail page:
- Area, bathrooms, reception rooms, heating type
- Leasehold details — ground rent, service charge, lease expiry (only relevant if Tenure is Leasehold)
- Current valuation — powers the LTV/equity figures on your dashboard
- Bin collection day, recycling rules, notes

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fill in every field to add a property?
No. Only Property Name, Address Line 1, City, Postal Code and Property Type are required. Everything else — area, bathrooms, heating type, valuation, leasehold charges, bin day — can be added later from the property's detail page.
What if I manage properties under more than one company or ownership structure?
Use Portfolios. RentFig creates a default one automatically so you're never blocked on this for your first property, and you can add more from Settings to keep entities separate (for example, yourself and a limited company).
Can I add flats or rooms within one property, for an HMO?
Yes, via Sub-Units — either right after creating the property (the wizard offers this as step 2), or later from the property's detail page. It's entirely optional and skippable.
How long does it actually take?
Under a minute for the 5 required fields. Everything else in the form is optional and can wait.
